Optional Test: CVS

CVS: Chorionic Villus Sampling

This test is performed early in pregnancy to look for genetic abnormalities. This is usually performed for women who have a history of genetic disorders or for other suspicions for genetic abnormality in the pregnancy. It is typically perfvormed between the 10th and 12th week of pregnancy. A long needle is used to obtain a sample of tissue from the placenta. This is done with ultrasound guidance. This test can not rule out neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. Additional tests can be performed.

Risk of miscarriage with CVS does exist and occurs once in every 100 women that have CVS performed.
